Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes that his former side will fly up the league now that the worst of their injury crisis is finally behind them, reports Goal.com.
In a disappointing campaign for the Old Trafford outfit, David Moyes’ side are in seventh place and face a struggle to secure a Champions League spot for next season. However, star strikers Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie have both been sidelined for extended periods and Scholes insists new boss Moyes, who was given a six year contract in the summer, has been unlucky in the injury department since he took over.
“I don’t think the manager can legislate for the amount of injuries he has had to deal with. We’ve missed Rooney and van Persie for big chunks of the season. They are two of the best centre-forwards in the world and any team would miss them.
“When we finally got them both back for the game against Stoke, suddenly we had four centre-halves not fit to play. It’s been a crazy season for injuries. Hopefully we’ll get a bit of luck with injuries and I’m sure if we get all our players fit we’ll get moving up the league,” he declared.
While injuries to two key men can go some way to explain a blip in form, United’s performances as a squad have been below par for the entire campaign. The return of Rooney and van Persie should provide some hope, as will the arrival of Juan Mata, but it will not be long before United’s season is nothing more than a damage limitation exercise unless they can put a run of results together.
