Pele has never been a man who has given out too many positive remarks during his press conferences. Him and Maradona are often found sparring at each other via the media. Also, recently he came out and said that Lionel Messi won’t be as good as him until and unless he scores the same number of goals as he has. But for once, arguably the greatest player of all time has come out and given golden words of advice to a Brazilian starlet, who would soon have to live up to the expectation of being a later-Galactico. Pele has told Neymar to stop diving.
Words of wisdom.
This past week, the Brazilian legend told Neymar that he should stop trying to con the referee by going down too easily and demanding for decisions. Although he has also taken the fact into account that Neymar is physically less strong, and would easily go down in challenges. “He is a player with a body that can’t take a lot of hits,” Pele told a news conference. “A lot of times he will fall because he can’t do anything else, but he was overdoing it.” But he has also added that this shouldn’t mean that the starlet should add any extra bit of drama to the situation and “exaggerate” it in any way. “Even when he is fouled, he can’t make a spectacle out of it,” he said. “I told him that he really needs to avoid that.”
Stay on your feet!
Pele’s words of advice come at a time when Neymar is supposed to make one of the biggest switches of his life, to La Liga giants Real Madrid. Though he is a gifted player, and many say that he might well go on to be one of the best of our times, opponents have often complained about his inability to stay on his feet. So, Pele has come out before he Penarol vs Santos final in the Copa Liberetadores, asking the player to up his reputation by not taking tumble too easily. Pele also joked about the recent comments reportedly made by Argentine great Diego Maradona, saying that Pele and Neymar are not polite.
“Maradona loves me, he really likes me,” Pele said. “I heard about what he said, it seems that now he is starting to worry about Neymar too. But I’ve said it before, we’ve met several times and I will always do whatever possible to help him in any way I can.”
