Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed his interest in signing Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona.
The 22-year-old midfielder has been a long-standing target of Manchester United with David Moyes also believed to be a big admirer of Thiago; however, the Old Trafford club are now set to lose out on the race to sign him.
The past few weeks of this summer had fans believe that the transfer of Thiago Alcantara to Manchester United was certain; but the Premier League Champions seem to have lost the race to sign the Spaniard as it seems likely that he may reunite with his former manager.
Pep said: “I want Thiago Alcantara. I have asked Bayern to get him but I don’t know what will happen. Thiago is the only player I want, that’s what I told them.
“It’ll be him or no one. We have many players but we the need the special extra quality that Thiago Alcantara brings.
“I know Thiago very well. I talked to Rummenigge and Sammer about him, we will wait and then see.
“I don’t think adding another midfielder will be a problem for us. I spoke to club about my concept and told them why I want Thiago Alcantara. I give my opinion, but I listen to the board. If they say no, that’s ok.
“Nobody will leave Barcelona, unless they feel they won’t play much. He wants to play. That’s why I proposed him to the club.”
If Thiago goes on to join Bayern Munich, he will have to fight for his place with the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Luis Gustavo, Toni Kroos and Mario Gotze.
With Paul Scholes announcing his retirement at the end of previous season and the future of injury-prone Anderson also uncertain, the news comes as a big blow to Manchester United manager David Moyes as he had been hoping to sign Thiago to bolster United’s midfield.
