Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina is close to completing a switch to Bayern Munich, with a medical due on Wednesday, according to reports.

The Reds are believed to have accepted an £2.5million initial offer with add-on from the Bundesliga champions for the Spanish international.

The news was unveiled by the German club themselves via social media networking site, Twitter.

German legend and Bayern Munich CEO, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge further detailed in on the deal on the club's official website, saying: “The player will come to Munich in the next few days for a medical exam and to sign his contract. Pepe Reina was eager to come to Bayern Munich.

“He wanted to embark on this adventure even though he knows that, in Manuel Neuer, he has a keeper in front of him who, if nothing changes, will always remain the number one.”

Reina arrived at Merseyside in 2005, spending eight seasons at Anfield. The La Masia product went on to win the FA Cup in 2006 and the League Cup in 2012 with Liverpool.

One of the best keepers on his day, Reina was also bestowed the award of the “Premier League Golden Glove” for three consecutive seasons from 2005 to 2008.

However, Reina was not able to win the confidence of Brendan Rodgers. Simon Mignolet was one of Rodgers’ first signing in order to replace the Spaniard , who was duly shipped off to Napoli on loan last season.

Napoli were unable to secure the Spaniard on a permanent move after they declined to meet Reina’s release clause which is set at £3.95m.

Reina had flown with the team to the United States for their pre-season tour, but failed to see any minute between the posts for the Reds.
