Peru vs Canada Head-to-Head stats and numbers you need to know before Match 9 of the 2024 Copa America

Peru v Chile - CONMEBOL Copa America USA 2024
Peru and Canada square off in Copa America on Tuesday

Peru and Canada square off at Children's Mercy Park in the second round of the 2024 Copa America group stage on Tuesday. Having failed to win their opening games, both sides will be looking to bounce back and get up and running in Group A.

Peru kicked off their quest for a third Copa America title last Friday when they played out a goalless draw with Chile at the AT&T Stadium.

Jorge Fossati’s men have failed to win their last three Copa America matches, claiming one draw and losing twice, including a 3-2 defeat against Colombia in the third-place playoff back in 2021.

Given their solid run in Copa America in the last three decades, La Blanquirroja are one of the dark horses in the United States. Since 1995, Peru have made it to the quarter-finals in their nine Copa America outings, reaching five semi-finals and clinching a second-place finish in 2019.

Meanwhile, Canada put up a fight against Argentina in the opening game of the tournament last Thursday but were no match for the reigning world champions as they fell to a 2-0 loss at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

This was the Reds’ first-ever Copa America, having secured qualification courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in the playoffs back in March.

Canada have failed to win three consecutive matches across all competitions, losing to Netherlands and Argentina, with a goalless draw against France on June 9 sandwiched between the two defeats.

Peru vs Canada Head-to-Head stats

This will be the third meeting between Peru and Canada, with both nations claiming one win in their previous two encounters.

They first met in a friendly matchup in March 1988, when Canada picked up a comfortable 3-1 victory. Peru returned the favour in September 2010, when they secured a 2-0 friendly win over the Canadians in Toronto.

Peru vs Canada Numbers you need to know before their 2024 Copa America encounter

Peru have failed to taste victory in their last eight competitive matches, losing five and claiming three draws since a 2-0 win over Paraguay in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March 2022.

Since their win over Paraguay, Fossati’s men have scored just one goal across their eight competitive games, while shipping eight at the opposite end of the pitch.

Canada have failed to win four of their last five matches in all competitions, losing three and claiming one draw since November 2023.

Peru are one of just six nations to have won multiple Copa America titles. Their first triumph came in 1939 (then called the South American Championship), before claiming a 1-0 victory over Colombia in the final to lift the title in 1975.

Peru have reached the Copa America semi-finals in four of the last five editions, with their quarter-final exit in 2019 being the exception.
