In the 10 years that Petr Cech has been at Chelsea, he has won virtually everything with the club and has achieved a lot. Despite this, he believes that this Chelsea team now has the potential to be the best ever!
He said:
“This team has the potential and the quality to become one of the best teams in Chelsea’s history if it proves it by winning the trophies. But I keep saying you can only judge teams at the end of the season when you see how much the team achieved.
“At this moment, we have been doing remarkably well but we have no trophy in our hands. So let's see what’s going to be the case at the end of the season.
“We want to win as many games as possible, as many competitions as possible, then let’s see what it’s going to bring us.
“It is difficult to know how many of them you can actually manage to win.
“You cannot say, ‘We leave this competition, we chase that competition’ because in the competition you pick you have one unlucky game and you have nothing. So you can’t treat competitions like that.’
“We progressed in the Champions League, our aim, we’ve progressed in the League Cup, we are top of the league, so far we are doing well.”
This is a huge statement to make bearing in mind we have not won anything yet. It's all well and good playing and performing as we have been up to this point, but if then we let important points slip away as we did last season it all counts for nothing.
Everyone remembers fondly the team of 2004-2005 and 2005-2006; our back-to-back title winning seasons. That team became a machine during that period and to be honest, at the moment we are a little bit short but not far off.
I personally hate all this talk of being invincible and now the quadruple, as it's something a long way off and something we shouldn't be thinking about at all. We need to keep our feet on the ground and focus on each game as it comes.
Yes we have the potential to be successful and to hopefully win plenty of silverware with this new group of players, but talking about it and doing it are two different things!
I hope big Pete is right come the end of the season and beyond.
