Everton's Phil Jagielka a major doubt for FA Cup clash against Arsenal

Manchester City's Aguero is challenged by Everton's Jagielka during their English Premier League soccer match in Manchester

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has branded Phil Jagielka’s chances or being passed fit to face Arsenal in Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final as doubtful, reports the Express.

The 31-year-old picked up a hamstring injury in training last week and was forced to miss England’s international friendly against Denmark at Wembley in midweek.

The former Sheffield United defender was expected to return in time for the trip to the Emirates but Toffees boss Martinez is now resigned to be without his captain for a crucial game.

“Phil Jagielka is very unlikely but with Phil you never know. If the game was tomorrow he wouldn’t be available but we will see,” he declared.

Although the England international will be keen to play, it is likely that youngster John Stones, who produced an excellent performance at centre-back against West Ham, will deputise.

Jagielka is a key member of the Everton back line and his team mates will have to replicate the level of performance they reached in a 1-1 draw in the corresponding Premier League fixture in north London in December if they are to progress.

“But winning a competition like this you have to find a way to be effective. It’s not a time to complain about luck or lack of it in the draw,” Martinez added.
