DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach has invited Philipp Lahm to play in the friendly match against Argentina on September 23, as he believes that the German defender should be sent off with a “worthy farewell”. He also insisted that Lahm is an extraordinary player and that it would be well-deserved appreciation.
Phillipp Lahm recently announced his retirement from International Football, after the completion of the World Cup where he captained the Germany team to World Cup victory in Brazil.
Nietsbach’s thoughts on Lahm
When asked whether there is any possibility of a comeback for Lahm, he replied that there have been comebacks in the past referring to Paul Breitner (when he came out of retirement following his return to Germany after a successful stint at Real Madrid), but discarded any chance of that happening with Lahm.
He also accepted and respected Lahm’s decision of retiring after the World Cup triumph and opined that he has been “running up and down the line like a sewing machine” for 10 years for Germany.
Niersbach also indicated that he regrets the former German captain’s decision to retire since the DFB would have ideally liked him to continue playing till the next European championship (though the general belief was that he would play till the next World Cup, considering his fitness and age).
