Match performance – one goal and nailing first-team spot
The former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder was unable to dislodge Nemanja Matic and N’Golo Kante from Chelsea’s midfield and had to endure a spell on the sidelines. However, when provided with opportunities in the last few weeks, he has put on classy performances.
Fabregas’ exquisite long ball led to the equaliser against Manchester City before he assisted Costa’s goal in last week’s win against West Brom. He went one step further against Sunderland by making a good run towards goal, exchanging passes with Willian and calmly placing the ball in the bottom-right corner from the edge of the box.
The goal turned out to be the winner and Matic now has a task on his hands as the Spaniard’s performances in the first team will make him hard to be benched.
