Premier League 2017/18: Burnley 0-1 Arsenal, Player Ratings

A r
A rare snap of Ashley Barnes on his feet againt Arsenal tonight.

Familiar scenes tonight at Turf Moor as Arsenal snatched a late winner against Sean Dyche's Burnley to climb up to fourth in the Premier League table.

Burnley started and stayed in the game through hard work and organisation but an unnecessary penalty in the final minute of the game robbed them of their effort. Dyche, though, will be thrilled with the way his side are taking the game to the bigger boys in the league.

Here are how the players fared at Turf Moor:

Burnley

Nick Pope - 6.5/10

A spectator for most of the game and did nearly well in the final minutes to try and fend off Alexis Sanchez's penalty for the visitors.

Mathew Lowton - 6/10

Pretty solid all game and did well to contain Alexis Sanchez and Sead Kolanisac in the first half but was often caught off position in the second and didn't help his side with the small scuffle prior to the penalty.

James Tarkowski - 7.5/10

James Tarkowski had an excellent game all night taking care of Alexander Lacazette and Alexis Sanchez with ease but his penalty give-away in the last minute was a huge blow to Burnley. Gareth Southgate would've liked what he saw for the first 91 minutes, though.

Ben Mee (C) - 7/10

6 clearances and 4 blocked shots inside the box meant Ben Mee once again produced the kind of display we're so used to seeing from him. Typical captain's performance.

Stephen Ward - 6.5/10

Stephen Ward was often suspect to Hector Bellerin's and Alex Iwobi's runs inside the box. Caught between marking one or the other, he did let in a lot of chances to be created for the left-hand-side. Long balls were unnecessary.

Johann Gudmundsson - 7.5/10

A typically robust performance in the centre of the park winning 12 of his 18 duels and creating a bunch of chances for his side in the attacking part of the game.

Steven Defour - 6/10

Barring his usual excellence in passing, Steven Defour didn't have the best of games and was taken off in the second half in favour of more attacking intent - something he'll not be too proud about.

Jack Cork - 6.5/10

Just like the whole of the team as a whole, Jack Cork did well in the first half and failed to live up to their standards in the second. Did have an exceptional 93.2% successful pass rate though.

Robbie Brady - 7/10

Ran riot in the first half until he received a yellow card after which he just had to tone down his game. Did create a bunch of chances and had a spectacular shot on target that Petr Cech made a good save of.

Jeff Hendrick - 6.5/10

Was seen as the kind of player to compliment Burnley's attack but Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey kept dragging him away into the midfield where he just didn't have the most comfortable of games.

Ashley Barnes - 6.5/10

Often left as a lone figure up top for Burnley but when given the chance, he dived towards the ground almost beautifully. Lost count of the number of times he had grass in his teeth voluntarily.

Substitutes

Chris Wood - 6/10

Came on after suffering from a hamstring injury for the past few weeks but didn't do enough to suggest his side missed him.

Arsenal

Petr Cech - 7/10

2 saves, 1 punch, 2 jump catches and a decent game overall for Petr Cech. His defence did save him a lot of trouble this evening.

Nacho Monreal - 6.5/10

Had a good back at the back but Monreal was often brushed aside with ease and needs to plant a firmer foot if he's to really make a difference for Arsenal's defence against some of these typically 'British' sides.

Shkodran Mustafi - 7.5/10

Easily one of the better defenders on the day again but was often victim to Ashley Barnes' ground-hogging techniques. Had one key pass to his name, again.

Laurent Koscielny - 8/10

Arsenal's best player of the day. 8 clearances, winning 6 of his 7 duels, a 90.2% pass accuracy and two key passes all made that last-minute winner from Sanchez so much so sweeter.

Sead Kolasinac - 6.5/10

Did more offensively than defensive but given Arsenal's system currently, it's no surprise he often saw himself in the box with his dribbles and his overlapping runs.

Granit Xhaka - 6.5/10

Not the best of performances from the Swiss and has often struggled with sides that bully him but did create one chance and should've had more if not for the wall ahead of him.

Aaron Ramsey - 7.5/10

God, this man runs a lot. Arsenal's most hard-working player again this time with 11.69 km against Burnley means Ramsey is a threat unlike most other midfielders in the Premier League.

Hector Bellerin - 6.5/10

Not a usual Bellerin-esque performance from the Spaniard today but did contribute in the final third more than he did where he's from. Can improve.

Alexis Sanchez - 8/10

Surprisingly didn't give away the ball as often and has contributed to five goals in his last six Premier League games thanks to the final penalty in tonight's encounter. Will be missed for the second part of the season.

Alex Iwobi - 6.5/10

A 91.3% successful pass percentage the only positive from Iwobi's game. Did take the ball smartly when needed but didn't do enough to create clear-cut chances in the final third - something the man he replaced - Mesut Ozil - would do better.

Alexander Lacazette - 7/10

He's finally getting the attention he deserves in the Premier League. His runs are excellent and he's a true threat for Arsenal unlike most of their other recent strikers.

Substitutes

Jack Wilshere - 6.5/10

Adds that fire when he comes on and did just that again for Arsenal. Will be glad he's being introduced earlier than usual in Premier League games.

Danny Welbeck - 6.5/10

Ran around, closed down and made 1 pass which was successful. Technically, the only player on the pitch with a 100% pass percentage rate. Pretty awesome, right?
