Liverpool regained the top spot after thrashing Huddersfield 5-0 at Anfield in game week 36. Liverpool who were on 2nd place before the game went head to head with Huddersfield who sat at the 20th position and are already relegated from the top tier. Jurgen Klopp started his regular playing eleven except Roberto Firmino who missed the match due to an injury, replaced by Daniel Sturridge.
Liverpool started the match with a bang as they scored in the 1st minute through Naby Keita who nicked the ball from Stankovic after which the ball fell to Salah who passed it onto the Guinean. Keita scored his 3rd goal in just 5 matches and even broke the record for Liverpool as he scored the quickest goal ever in the club's history with just 15 seconds into the match.
The reds went onto score 4 more goals through Mo Salah and Mane who scored twice each while having ample of opportunities to complete their hat-trick.
Alex Oxlade Chamberlain returned from a long term injury after a year replacing Daniel Sturridge. He managed to wobble inside the opposition box just after coming on but failed to score as his weak shot from his weaker foot was saved by Huddersfield's Lossl.
Liverpool are now 1st with 91 points with their arch-rivals Manchester City just 2 points below them at 2nd but with a game in hand.
Here are 3 players who stood out in the 5-0 thrashing of Huddersfield:
#3 Andrew Robertson
Andy Robertson managed to put on another brilliant performance for Liverpool as he assisted twice and kept a clean sheet. Robertson was phenomenal with his attack, passing and defending, literally covering almost every aspect of the game. He tracked back when the defence needed him and attacked when the strikers needed assists.
If there was any doubt of his crossing ability, Robertson cleared everything out with 2 heavenly crosses which were turned into goals by Mane and Salah. His 23rd minute cross straight onto the head of Mane was as sweet of a cross as it gets. His 2nd assist came for Salah when he made an overlapping run behind Shaqiri who cut the ball into his path. The Huddersfield defence made things easier for him as they were out of formation and Robertson crossed the ball into the path of Salah who had the easiest task of tapping the ball into the net.
Robertson has now 10 assists in this Premier League season, being only the third defender throughout Premier League's history to make it to the double figures in assists. Another unbelievable stat is that he has got as many PL assists this season as Jesse Lingard, Kevin de Bruyne, Juan Mata, Mesut Ozil, Sadio Mane and Fred have got between them.
Overall, Robertson was on top of his game and if he continues with these performances, the path for being a legend might be on the way for him.
#2 Sadio Mane
Sadio Mane played one of his better matches for Liverpool and was one of the main stars in the Huddersfield thrashing. He was fluent in his movement throughout the match and looked sharp in front of goal.
Mane's first goal came in the 23rd minute from Robertson's cross who crossed the ball straight onto his head. Mane nodded the ball into the back of the net and doubled the lead. Mane changed the score-line to 4-0 with his second goal which came in the 66th minute, another header but this time the cross came from Liverpool's captain Jordan Henderson. Mane showed no signs of stopping as he was still going on with full power onto the Huddersfield defence.
Mane came close to completing his hat-trick with another header in the 78th minute, when, the substitute Shaqiri crossed the ball from the right flank straight onto his head but he only managed to hit the post from a point-blank range.
Mane now sits on 2nd position with 20 goals in this season, behind his compatriot Mo Salah.
His performance today displayed his brilliance and the quality he possesses. He was instrumental in the victory and undoubtedly, a contender for Man Of The Match.
#1 Mo Salah
Another week, another world-class performance from the Egyptian King. Many have criticized and questioned his ability and skills, but he proved his critics wrong today with an exceptional performance capped by 2 goals and an assist.
Salah was all over the Huddersfield defence creating problems with his dribbling on the right flank or running into the gaps through the back four. His movement was causing a lot of damage to the opposition defence who wasn't quite able to handle him. He helped Naby Keita get his goal in the first 15 seconds by passing the ball into the midfielder's path who slotted home the goal.
Salah scored his first goal and Liverpool's third in stoppage time of the first half. A Trent Alexander Arnold long ball through the centre of the field tore apart Huddersfield's defence whose defenders were out of positions. The ball bounced in front of Salah who managed to dink it over the rushing goalkeeper, making it look very simple. The finish was exquisite and was applauded greatly by the fans and critics.
Salah's 2nd and Liverpool's 5th came in the 83rd minute when he tapped-in a perfectly crossed ball by Robertson in a mellow style. This was Salah's 21st goal of this season due to which he's first amongst the goal scorers in the league this season.
Many fans were critical of Salah's performance this season but an overview surely clears all the doubts, he is still one of the very best in the league and even in the world.
