Flop: Emerson
Although he has been impressive under Frank Lampard so far, left-back Emerson had a poor outing in tonight's big game. The Italian international just 49 touches of the ball, while he failed to make a single tackle or interception at the back for Chelsea.
The defender did have two blocked shots, but he also committed two fouls and completed the least passes amongst all the Chelsea defenders. He looked unsure while going forward, and was often the weakest link at the back for the Blues. Emerson was subbed off by the manager just before the hour-mark, and he will be hoping to put this game behind him.
1) Hit: Riyad Mahrez
Manchester City won the game today due to the individual brilliance of Riyad Mahrez. In the 37th minute of the match, Rodrigo passed the ball to the Algerian international, who completed a dribble and cut inside the Chelsea box to lash a superb shot past Kepa. The goal was reminiscent of the Mahrez we knew and loved at Leicester, where he slashed and cut defenders with ease.
The winger attempted 5 shots today, completed a game-high 4 dribbles and made one key pass. He was a constant menace for the Chelsea defence, and it was his goal that ultimately proved to be the winner in this all-important fixture. If Mahrez continues to play like this in the coming weeks, Manchester City will become a lot more threatening.
