#5 Virgil Van Dijk
The Dutchman never seems to get tired of his defensive duties and Liverpool owes a lot to him for his defensive work. He had a good day out against Southampton but not without errors and not without toil. His wow-moment was the slick flick with his boot to stop the lobbed ball.
Virgil van Dijk blocked 3 shots, made 3 clearances and won 3/5 aerial duels. He also made 2 interceptions, one of which he flicked back in style. However, he had his share of mistakes too which would have been on him if a goal was conceded.
One of the aerial duels that he missed was during a corner where he was beaten in the air by Maya Yoshida allowing him a free header on Adrian. Another time he let Che Adams get a clean header on the ball. In the second half, Danny Ings sneaked from behind him to try and tap the ball in, while Van Dijk did nothing to try and intercept the delivery.
It was a performance which you'd otherwise call a solid one but it was not without its share of flaws. So van Dijk will move up 2 places from his former position and stay ahead of the new entrants on the back of his performance in week 1.
