The Saints took the lead in the 21st minute of the game as Dusan Tadic slotted the ball into the back of the net following an exquisite run from Bertrand down the left flank. Jan Bednarek seemed to put the game to bed by scoring his team's second as the clock struck the half-hour mark.
The introduction of Giroud in the 60th minute turned out to be the crucial moment of the game as he reduced the deficit to one in the 70th minute. Within five minutes, Saints' lead disappeared as Eden Hazard netted the visitors' second of the game.
