Chelsea FC signed the 24 year old Croatia international on a season long loan after his dream run at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where Croatia progressed to the finals for the first time in their history. Kovacic played 5 games in this run. Although he had a successful World Cup, he couldn't really get going at his parent club, appearing only 17 times in the last season for Los Blancos.
Kovacic is part of a deal that saw Thibaut Courtois going the other way in a previously completed £35 million, 6 year deal.
