Borussia Dortmund are set to lose another of their star players after central defender Neven Subotic revealed his decision to quit the club on his official Facebook page. Subotic’s decision has come after falling down the pecking order under the new manager Tomas Tuchel.
The 27-year old made just 6 league appearances last season and is looking for regular playing time as he seeks a way out of Signal Iduna Park. The timing of Subotic’s departure could not have been worst after Dortmund have recently seen Mats Hummels join Bayern Munich and Henrikh Mkhitaryan is looking likely to sign for Manchester United in coming days.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Subotic wrote: “Dear friends, during the last year I realised that my love for the game of football in an active role is too big to just be able to see it from outside. Football is an important part of my life. I love it and I can’t be without it.
“I am in the best age for a football player and I want to use my time to improve myself and my team every day. And I want to have the feeling I am needed and I can give everything for my club. That is what I am thinking about.
“I do not want to earn my money on the bench, but to be an active part of the history like I was until last year. I hope you can understand that.
“Borussia Dortmund is the club of my heart and it will always be. Yours, Neven”
Subotic’s decision must have come as a huge boost to Liverpool’s hopes of reuniting the player with his former manager Jurgen Klopp. It was Klopp, who brought Subotic to Dortmund back in 2008 and since then the defender has gone on to make over 250 appearances for the German club.

Subotic was linked with a move to Anfield last January but nothing concrete came out from the rumours. It resulted in Klopp signing Joel Matip from Schalke on a free transfer who is now expected to be a regular starter for The Reds next season. However, with Subotic announcing his decision to quit Dortmund we may see Liverpool and other Premier League clubs going in to a bidding war to sign the dependable Serbian International.
Subotic is contracted with Dortmund until June 2018 and interested clubs will need to splash something in the region of £8-10million to sign the 27-year old central defender. Whether Klopp fancies a move for his former prodigy remains to be seen but there will be a whole host of clubs lining up a move for Subotic this summer.
