Weirdest way of denying a goal

When you are playing football, and your side is trying hard for a goal, hitting the bar can infuriate you to the limits. The number of occasions a team rattles the frame of the goal is quietly related the amount of attacking they do.

Some accredit it to bad luck, others to imperfect striking, but hitting the woodwork can be the difference between a win and a negative result. There's nothing more frustrating than a blistering shot that strikes the bar late in a game, but some Premier League sides have experienced that emotion more than others.

In reality, striking the crossbar is just an inaccuracy. Here we map out the unluckiest Premier League side so far this season.

As a team, United have a shot accuracy of 34% and have scored 49 times this season. They would have done even better had they scored the eleven shots that struck the bar so far this season.

The unluckiest player in the squad is Jesse Lingard who has hit the post 3 times. If every Premier League shots that have hit the woodwork had gone in, Man United would be a strong contender for Premier League title.

Southampton have a short accuracy of 28% as a team and have scored 24 times this season. Charlie Austin and Ryan Bertrand have each been denied by the post two times.

Had Mauricio Pellegrino's side seen some of their 12 efforts which strike the woodwork, settle in the back of the net instead, it could have been a different story for the Premier League side.

#3 Arsenal (12 times)

The London based club missed the goal many times this season as they also struck the bar 12 times.

Arsenal is 6th in the Premier League table, 5 points behind fourth-placed side Liverpool. A top-four finish to seal Champions League football next season is still not assured. Wenger will feel the 12 shots hitting the woodwork so far this season would have made the case very different.

The most unfortunate player in the squad is none other than Alexandre Lacazette. Granit Xhaka and Hector Bellerin are the other players to have enjoyed a slice of bad luck this season.

#2 Liverpool (14 times)

#1 Manchester City (16 times)

<p>
Manchester City have scored 70 goals this season

This year we have the saga of Manchester City's affection for striking the bar. The average number of times a PL side hit the post in this season is around 8, so City's total of 16 is surely excessive.

With possibly the best finishers in world football, it is not that surprising that City feature on this list as the triumvirate of Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling naturally shoot whenever possible.

Despite the close misses, Manchester City are the leaders of the Premier League.
