Gameweek 6 of the Premier League proved to be an interesting one with Arsenal recording a victory over Chelsea for the first time in five years. Meanwhile, Liverpool continued their goal-scoring spree although a clean sheet continues to evade them. And Sergio Aguero was back and on the scoreboard; not really surprising that, is it?
Find out which Premier League players make it to Sportskeeda’s Premier League Team of the Week.
Goalkeeper – Petr Cech
Since Cech’s move to Arsenal, he had yet to keep a clean sheet against Chelsea. This Saturday however, was a different story. Arsenal were in rare form against their London rivals. The night provided three goals for the Gunners and that elusive clean sheet for Cech against his former club. He even put in two important saves to deny the Blues any consolation.
Defenders
Daley Blind
Daley Blind was a massive threat from set pieces this past week. Two of his corners from the left resulted in goals for Chris Smalling and Paul Pogba. He even began the build up to Marcus Rashford’s goal.
Hector Bellerin
Probably the best right-back in the Premier League at present, Bellerin assisted Walcott with Arsenal’s second goal of the night with a low cross. He even did a great job of catching up with Pedro and putting in an important tackle when it seemed like his compatriot was sure to score.
Ryan Bertrand
Ryan Bertrand was a source of constant threat to West Ham, especially during the first half. With a trio of midfield players ahead of him, he took every chance he got to surge forward and create opportunities for his team. He was quick to overlap Michail Antonio and provide a low cross to Austin which the latter placed in the back of the net.
Midfielders
Paul Pogba
With a total of 99 passes against Leicester City, Paul Pogba played his best game yet in a Manchester United shirt. He was dominant in the midfield making clever passes and even scored his first goal for the club. He headed in United’s fourth goal of the night from a Daley Blind corner.
Adam Lallana
Adam Lallana was heavily involved in Liverpool’s 5-1 win over Hull City on Saturday. He displayed intelligent movement and crisp footwork till he was taken off to resounding applause. A cool finish to the first goal and two assists meant Lallana had done his job for the night.
Philippe Coutinho
Philippe Coutinho was versatility personified against Hull. The opposition couldn’t pin him down to any one position as the Brazilian kept popping up everywhere on the pitch. His work rate was impressive, going as far back into deep midfield to collect the ball and begin a fresh wave of attack. He scored one goal, a signature curler from outside the box.
Alexis Sanchez
Alexis Sanchez made his 100th appearance for Arsenal against Chelsea and kicked off his special night with the first goal of the night. He ran the entire Chelsea team ragged and gave them no respite. One of the most hardworking men on the pitch, Sanchez provided the assist for Ozil’s goal.
Son Heung-Min
Son Heung-Min was Tottenham’s best player on the pitch. The Korean scored a brace with immense composure and skill and proved that he was the team’s best player on a dead ball. He was superb with his corners, putting the Middlesbrough defenders under pressure with every delivery.
Forwards
Sergio Aguero
Sergio Aguero is one of those rare players who doesn’t seem to lose form. Compelled to stay out of the team for three games because of a ban seemed to have made no difference to Manchester City’s Argentine star.
He started the game against Swansea City and took less than 10 minutes to find the back of the net. His second goal of the night came from the spot after De Bruyne earned a penalty for the Citizens.
Jermain Defoe
It’s quite unfortunate that Jermain Defoe is stuck playing for Sunderland. Before the Black Cats lost to Crystal Palace, Defoe gave his team a two-goal lead. Needless to say, Defoe did not deserve to be on the losing side this week.
Honourable Mention: James Milner
The likes of Lionel Messi and Alexis Sanchez should take a page out of James Milner’s book on taking penalties. The central midfielder who has recently been occupying the left-back position netted two goals from the spot after Liverpool were awarded two penalties.
Not only was Milner defensively impressive but his forward runs throughout the game kept Liverpool a step ahead of Hull.
Substitutes
Midfielder – Demarai Gray
Demarai Gray came on for Jamie Vardy at the start of the second half and provided Leicester City’s only moment of redemption when he scored a spectacular goal from the edge of the box. There was literally nothing anyone could have done to stop his shot after he went past Jesse Lingard.
Midfielder – David Meyler
Hull City manager Mike Phelan was forced to bring on David Meyler after El Mohamady was sent off against Liverpool. The substitute provided some consolation when he scored from a set piece.
Midfielder – James Ward-Prowse
Who would have known one goal scorer would be replaced by another. James Ward-Prowse came on for Tadic and scored the Saints’ final goal of the night in injury time.
Manager – Arsene Wenger
It took Wenger five years to pull off a win against Chelsea and he sure did it in style. After getting it wrong against their London rivals for half a decade, the Frenchman was on point this Saturday. Arsenal were disciplined, choked the Blues wherever they went and were very quick to capitulate on their breaks.
Arsene Wenger and his men were sublime going forward and earned a well-deserved win.
