Alderweireld's contract has been extended

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld’s one-year extension has been triggered. As a result, his contract with Spurs has been extended to 2020. This also means that he could be signed for just £25 million in the next summer transfer window.

According to Paul Merson, having Alderweireld for another year is a bonus for the Lilywhites. He also believes that this brings a feel-good factor to the team with Spurs already flying high in the Premier League.

“Massive bonus for Tottenham, massive bonus. It’s hard to replace someone like him,” Merson was quoted as saying.

“I know the fee has gone up, but even to keep him an extra year, it’s another major feel-good factor for Tottenham, flying along, he signs an extension, everything’s happening for Tottenham at the moment.

“They’re dangerous, Tottenham, there’s no doubt about it.”
