A story emerged on the Premier League website on Sunday whose headline read: “Portuguese coach is back at Stamford Bridge after signing a xx-year contract.”
The story, however, was later removed from the site. According to BBC Sport, the Premier League said it was an error and it had no knowledge of a deal at all.
The story went on: “Jose Mourinho returns for second stint as Chelsea manager. Portuguese signs x-year-deal.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea have made no comment on this issue so far. Mourinho’s association with Real Madrid ended after three years at the helm on Saturday with a 4-2 win over Osasuna.
There is a lot of speculation about his return to Stamford Bridge and re-join the club that he led to back-to-back Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006. He left them after a spat with owner Roman Abramovich to join Inter Milan in 2008.
Following Saturday’s match, Real Madrid defender Ricardo Carvalho, who has signed for French side Monaco, also hinted that Mourinho will join Chelsea.
When asked if Chelsea can win the league next season, the Portuguese defender replied: “I’m sure in two, three years they can but even in his [Mourinho's] first year he can win it again.”
Carvalho recalled: “When we arrived together in 2004 Chelsea had not won the league for 50 years so I hope now they can win it again. Jose is a special coach and I think he deserves all the best because he works very hard.”
