Preston North End play host to Watford in EFL Championship action on Wednesday

The EFL Championship returns with a fresh set of fixtures as Preston North End play host to Watford at the Deepdale Stadium on Wednesday. Paul Heckingbottom’s men will head into the midweek clash looking to get one over the visitors, having failed to win the last six meetings between the two teams since August 2015.

Preston North End continue to struggle for results in the new EFL Championship campaign as they suffered a 3-1 defeat against 10-man Millwall at the Den on Saturday.

Heckingbottom’s side have gone four straight games without a win in the league, picking up two draws and losing twice since a 1-0 victory over Luton Town on August 24.

Off the back of a 10th-placed finish in the 2023-24 campaign, Preston North End have picked up just five points from their opening seven matches to sit 22nd in the Championship table.

Watford, on the other hand, stopped the rot last Saturday as they held on to secure a 2-1 victory over Sunderland at Vicarage Road. Before that, the Hornets were on a four-game winless run, claiming one draw and losing three, including a narrow 2-1 defeat against Manchester City in the EFL Cup third round on September 24.

With 13 points from seven matches, Watford are seventh in the Championship table and could move level with first-placed West Bromwich Albion with a win on Wednesday.

Preston North End vs Watford Head-To-Head and Key Numbers

  • Watford have failed to win seven of their last eight competitive away games, losing five and claiming two draws since the start of April.

Preston North End vs Watford Prediction

Buoyed by their hard-fought win over Sunderland, Watford will head into the midweek clash with renewed confidence as they look to put together a fine run of form.

However, the Hornets’ form on the road is nothing to write home about and we predict Preston will hold out for a share of the spoils at the Deepdale Stadium.

Prediction: Preston North End 1-1 Watford
