Paris Saint-Germain owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi has claimed that former Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria wanted to move to the French club ahead of his transfer to Manchester United.
This comes in the wake of the Argentine revealing in a press conferene that the Manchester club is the only team he would have left Real Madrid for.
Speaking to French daily Le Parisien, Al-Khelaifi revealed that the transfer falling through had nothing to do with the FFP regulations imposed on the club by Uefa.
“For two or three weeks, I discussed this issue [of signing Di Maria] with my friend Florentino Perez, president of Real Madrid. We met twice, and we made ??an offer, but we could not agree on the price.
For me he was too expensive. It has nothing to do with the financial fair play. The player wanted to come to Paris, but this was not possible.”
He also criticised Uefa for imposong sanctions on the French champions which regulated their spending to £58 million (£50 million on David Luiz and the rest on Serge Aurier ).
The club had spent £89m on securing the service of Edinson Cavani, Lucas Digne and Marquinhos last season.
Sounding out a warning to the organisation, he claimed that the Financial Fairplay Regulations are unfair.
“I do not know if Michel Platini wants to kill French football, but FFP is not fair,” he added. “It is very difficult to understand. The big clubs stay big and small clubs remain small.
“We respect the rules but want to discuss it with Uefa in October to try to change the rules a little. Otherwise investors will not come in football - they will go to other sports such as Formula 1.”
