Defensive Midfielder - Idrissa Gueye
Idrissa Gueye and Danilo Pereira are PSG's defensive midfield options, with Gueye starting and scoring against Brest.
The 31-year0old enjoyed a highly impressive spell with Everton in the Premier League before joining PSG in 2019. Gueye is defensively excellent, and is the ideal player to have in a team brimming with world-class attacking talent.
The Senegal international was linked with a move away from PSG following the arrival of Lionel Messi, as the club sought to reduce their wage bill. However, Pochettino clearly rates the midfielder highly, and his defensive solidity could see him become a key player for PSG this season.
Central Midfielder - Marco Verratti
Marco Verratti is one of the best midfielders in the world, and will likely start every game for PSG if he is fully fit.
Verratti is a complete midfielder, blessed with excellent technical ability as well as a tigrish attitude. The Italy international has been at PSG since 2012, and is now one of the most experienced players in the squad. Verratti's quality was on display at Euro 2020, which the Azzurri won.
The 28-year-old, like Marquinhos, is one of the few players who will likely start on a regular basis for PSG. Verratti was recently praised by Lionel Messi.
Central Midfielder - Georginio Wijnaldum
Another big name arrival, Georginio Wijnaldum joined PSG after his contract with Liverpool expired.
Wijnaldum turned down Barcelona to join the Ligue 1 giants. Pochettino now has an incredible roster of midfielders to choose from, with Wijnaldum, Verratti and Gueye competing with Danilo Pereira, Leandro Paredes, Ander Herrera and Rafinha.
The Netherlands international is regarded by many as a world-class player, who is renowned for his work off the ball. Wijnaldum will provide experience and quality to PSG's midfield.
Attacking Midfielder - Angel Di Maria
To have Angel Di Maria as a potential backup option shows how a strong a roster PSG have.
The potential departure of Kylian Mbappe could see a significant rise in Di Maria's minutes this season. The Argentina international is a world-class forward, well-known for his creativity and dribbling ability, and is a player who often chips in with key goals.
Di Maria scored the winner for Argentina in the Copa America 2021 final, and has been a consistent starter for PSG since joining the club in 2015. If you ignore his lone campaign with Manchester United, Di Maria has had a sparkling career.
