FATV recently sat down with England U21 goalkeeper Jason Steele and England left back/left winger Ryan Bertrand to allow fans the opportunity to ask them anything. The usual questions of ‘best player you’ve played with’ and ‘favourite England player’ pop up, but some answers may surprise – especially when it comes to the topic of club versus country. Take Jason Steele‘s response to playing in the Champions League with ‘Boro or winning a Senior cap for England. Though if you were playing Champions League football, arguably you would be in the England setup, but still – a sign of the modern footballer?
Jason Steele has played second fiddle to Birmingham City and fellow Team GB goalkeeper Jack Butland for the better part of 2011 through 2012, but his aspirations for progressing up the ranks are still very much alive and well. As heard in the video below, you can hear the pride in Jason Steele’s voice when he speaks about his boyhood club, but how much longer will he persist with ‘Boro? According to a recent rumour in The People, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is on the hunt for two new goalkeepers and has identified Jason Steele as an ideal candidate to shift to Anfield as cover for a more experienced shot-stopper.
It would be a major change of pace for Steele, shifting away from a club where he is the automatic first pick and who he has played almost 100 times for. Much will likely depend on the Anfield club’s valuation of theEngland U21 goalkeeper, and furthermore, whether or not Jason Steele would ever consider moving away from the safety of The Riverside stadium.
The 22-year-old was part of Stuart Pearce‘s Great Britain squad for the London 2012 Olympics, and played in the friendly against Brazil prior to the tournament.
