Radamel Falcao’s woes continue as he has managed only one goal so far this season and the media continues to label him as a player who has lost his touch. Contrary to such notions, the Colombian striker opines that if he is given regular game time, he would prove otherwise.
Currently plying his trade for Chelsea, the striker is often seen on the bench or some times not even on the matchday squad. Considerably frustrated with his present situation, he claimed that it is the lack of playing time and not injuries that are to blame for his form.
Falcao was signed on loan by Manchester United in 2014 from Monaco, but he only managed to score four times for the Red Devils. It seemed Louis Van Gaal was not convinced by the striker, who spent spent most of his time on the bench anxiety writ large on his face. Even when he did get a chance in the first XI, the 29-year-old failed to make an impact.
“I have recovered from my knee injury”
Having failed at United, El Tigre, as he is commonly called, was summoned by Jose Mourinho to Chelsea last year. Mourinho believed that he was the man to restore Falcao’s confidence and coaxed him to Stamford Bridge.
“If I can help Falcao reach his level again, I will do it. It hurts me people in England think that the real Falcao is the one we saw at United,” Mourinho told reporters at a press conference when signing him.
Falcao, who was not very long ago touted as one of the best finishers in the world, has scored only once in 11 appearances for the defending Premier League champions. The Colombian, however, pins it down to the lack of time on the pitch.
In an interview to Colombian weekly magazine Semana, he said, “I have recovered from my knee injury. The problem is since then I have not had the chance to play a whole season to get back my confidence and become competitive again.”
"If I had had that regular football, you would not be saying this right now,” Falcao clarified. “I try not to destabilise myself. People talk a lot, but they also say some positive things and I try to welcome those messages because they encourage me and it what I am looking for.”
Falcao takes a dig at the media
Regarding his knee injury, Guus Hiddink had commented that it was “very serious”, but Falcao insist it’s not about his knee. Falcao has instead blamed the media for not being responsible enough when reporting an information.
He said, “Everyone is free to express their opinions, but I think that journalists should do it with more responsibility. They lack accuracy. Today they do not go to the source to confirm the news and say things that are not true. The only thing they haven't said yet is that Falcao is going to play in a team outside the Earth.”
