Rafael Benitez: Napoli have no intention of signing Pepe Reina

Reina in action for Napoli

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina’s hopes of permanently joining Napoli have been dashed by the Rafael Benitez who stated that the club have no intention of re-signing the shot stopper according to the Daily Mail.

The 31-year-old, who performed brilliantly for Napoli last season, still has two years left on his Liverpool deal but is unlikely to get much first team football at the Anfield club due to Simon Mignolet firmly establishing himself as their number 1.

The Spain international recently confessed that he would like to stay with the Naples outfit but may not fancy battling for a first team spot with Napoli’s three other goalkeepers and will probably look for first team football elsewhere.

“We don't seek a goalkeeper,” Benitez said on his official website, www.rafabenitez.com.

“Rafael, with whom I keep in touch often to monitor his progress first hand, (Mariano) Andujar and (Roberto) Colombo are a sufficient guarantee for our goal.”

Reina gained cult status among the Napoli fans after he saved a penalty from Mario Balotelli, who is one of the best penalty takers in the world.
