#3 Defensive and midfield conundrum for Frank Lampard

Lampard would have a hard time selecting his team

Throughout the course of Chelsea's three preseason fixtures, Frank Lampard has stuck to his promise of testing everyone, as he has given every member of his squad a chance to impress.

They came into the match against Barcelona having won just one of their three fixtures and embarrassingly fell to a 1-0 defeat to Japanese side Kawasaki Frontale.

Lampard would have been seeking an immediate response and would have be very delighted with what he saw, as everybody from youngsters to established regulars gave their all in a bid to impress their new gaffer.

This is especially true in defense, where the much maligned David Luiz looked a player reborn, while Fikayo Tomori was also impressive.

The latter spent last season on loan under Lampard's watch and was an integral part of the side that finished as runners up in the playoffs, appearing in all 44 of Derby's matches in the regular season.

He started today's fixture on the bench, but was rock solid upon entering the pitch and showed a willingness to put his body on the line.

Elsewhere, there are also solid central defensive options like Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma who impressed against Barcelona and that is without adding the currently injured Antonio Rudiger.

In midfield, there are multiple options for Lampard to choose from and the midfielders had a hand to play in both goals against Barcelona, with Jorginho laying on the pass for Abraham to open the scoring while Ross Barkley netted the winner.

Frank Lampard would have a hard time settling on his defensive and midfield combinations, but as any coach would tell you, they love it when they have selection headaches as it puts players on their toes to umprove and this is one problem Lampard would be delighted with.
