Gareth Southgate has officially stepped down as the head coach of England. It comes in the wake of the Three Lions painful Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain on Sunday, July 14.
Southgate, who has been in charge of the England national team since 2016, will now vacate his role after taking charge of 102 games.
He also managed to guide the three Lions to two major European finals, losing to eventual winners, Italy in 2021 and most recently Spain.
In his words, after calling it quit with the England national team, Southgate said as quoted by Fabrizio Romano:
"As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all”.
"But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. I’m leaving my role”.
Meanwhile, the English FA will now be saddled with the responsibility of bringing in a suitable replacement to take charge of the Three Lions. As such, this article will take a look at five suitable replacements that could take over from Southgate.
5. Frank Lampard
The English tactician could be a decent candidate to take over from Southgate given his managerial pedigree at the clubs he has managed.
Frank Lampard, 46, who is also an England legend, would also most certainly command huge respect from the senior national team players due to his achievements during his playing career.
He also has a good record of working with young players notably, during his first spell with Premier League giants Chelsea. Such traits could possibly position him to take charge of the relatively young and talented Three Lions squad.
4. Graham Potter
Another manager who could be a decent option to take over the now-vacant England managerial position is former Chelsea head coach Graham Potter.
The English tactician has since been out of job after he was sacked by Chelsea in 2023 and could possibly find the vacant England national team role attractive.
Potter is known for his attractive possession-based style of play, which earned him much recognition during his time with Brighton & Hove Albion. Such a philosophy, could be an ideal fit for the current crop of England players.
3. Mauricio Pochettino
The Argentine tactician is also another name that could possibly be considered by the English FA to replace former manager Southgate.
Mauricio Pochettino is widely regarded as one of Europe's finest tactician's judging by his antecedents at the respective club sides he has managed in recent years.
He is also very much familiar with some of the England national team stars, having worked with a couple at club level. Notable mentions include Cole Palmer, Kyle Walker, Conor Gallagher, Kieran Trippier, and not forgetting Harry Kane.
Pochettino is also another manager that has a good pedigree of working with young players, notably during his time at Southampton, Tottenham and most recently Chelsea. Such could be a perfect match for the relatively young Three Lions squad.
4. Eddie Howe
The Newcastle United head coach is currently among the Premier League's finest tacticians and would be a decent fit for the Three Lions squad.
Eddie Howe has earned a good name for himself, judging by the brilliant work he has done with the Magpies, making them a force to contend with in the Premier League.
The English tactician is known for his highly offensive, possession-based style of play. He is also very flexible with his in-game approach, which could be an upgrade on Southgate.
1. Jürgen Klopp
Another name that could possibly be a top contender for consideration by the English FA would most likely be former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp.
The German tactician is currently out of job having recently decided to step down from his role at Liverpool after nine years at Anfield.
Klopp, 57, is not just a renowned tactician; he is also a serial winner who could be a perfect fit to help the Three Lions of England break their long trophy drought. He also has a good pedigree of working with young players and could be an ideal long-term option for England.
