It was not just Inter Milan who had a sparkling transfer window in 2009. European giants and La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid also spent big that summer.
The Merengues, as part of their Galacticos policy, landed Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo in a world-record deal worth €94 million. Not content with just Ronaldo's acquisition, Madrid splurged €67 million to land Brazilian superstar Kaka from AC Milan and promising French forward Karim Benzema from Olympique Lyon for €21 million.
Their other arrivals that summer were Liverpool's midfield maestro Xabi Alonso, Valencia center-back Raul Albiol, Almeria forward Alvaro Negredo and Liverpool left-back Alvaro Arbeloa.
While the others largely had underwhelming stints at the club, Ronaldo, Benzema and Alonso proved to be mightily inspired acquisitions. During a highly successful nine-season stint at the club, Ronaldo scored a club-record 450 goals, won four Champions League titles and as many Ballon d'Or awards.
Alonso was a stout presence in the Merengues midfield during his five years at the club, winning a La Liga and Champions League title. Meanwhile, Benzema, who is still at the club, has scored close to 300 goals.

Chelsea announced themselves as a force to be reckoned with when they made a series of inspired signings in the summer of 2004.
After landing Champions League-winning coach Jose Mourinho, the Blues made 11 new signings that summer. That included Marseille forward Didier Drogba, Porto's defensive pair of Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira and PSV winger Arjen Robben, among others.
Chelsea's expensively assembled roster broke the duopoly of Manchester United and Arsenal as the Blues became the team to beat in England.
Most of the summer signings enjoyed stellar stints with Chelsea, who won successive Premier League titles with their star-studded roster.
Drogba cemented his status as one of Chelsea's all-time greats and developed quite the reputation of scoring important goals in big game, as he won trophies aplenty during his time with the Blues.

Paris-Saint Germain (PSG) have had arguably the best transfer window of any club in the game's history.
After landing Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos, Liverpool's midfield maestro Georginio Wijnaldum and Italy's Euro 2020-winning keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, the Ligue 1 giants pulled the mother of all coups when they snapped up Lionel Messi from Barcelona.
The fact that cash-rich PSG acquired all four players on free transfers makes it all the more astounding.
Messi, who spent his 17 seasons at Barcelona, failed to agree a contract extension with the Catalans, which opened the door for PSG to barge in. Messi now joins Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in one of the game's most devastating triumvirates.
PSG have also splashed the cash this summer, acquiring Inter Milan right-back Achraf Hakimi for €60 million, while Danilo Pereira made his loan move from FC Porto permanent. The summer could get better for the Parisian club, as they are rumored to be interested in signing AC Milan left-back Theo Hernandez.
With an expensively assembled roster brimming with quality in all positions, it remains to be seen if PSG will be able to conquer Europe this season, as their domestic resurgence is all but a certainty.
