#3 Cristiano Ronaldo becomes the joint-most prolific scorer in international football (2021)
Cristiano Ronaldo has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Portugal's title defense may have ended on a whimper at Euro 2020, but Ronaldo was one of their standout performers.
The 36-year-old scored in all three group-stage games to move level with Iranian legend Ali Daei (109) for the joint-most goals by a male player in international football. Earlier in the tournament, he became the first player to appear and score in five different European Championships.
Against Belgium in the Round of 16, Ronaldo had the opportunity to take outright ownership of the record. But the Juventus striker and his Portugal team-mates drew a blank on the night as Thorgan Hazard's stunner sent the holders packing out of the competition.
#2 'That' hat-trick against Spain at the World Cup (2018)
Cristiano Ronaldo began his campaign at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia with a sumptuous hat-trick against former champions Spain, helping Portugal force a share of the spoils in a six-goal thriller.
A penalty from Ronaldo gave Portugal an early lead before the Portuguese put his team in front once again before half-time after Spain had leveled proceedings.
With the former champions scoring twice in the second half, Ronaldo scored a delicious free-kick to ensure a thrilling all-Iberian derby ended all square in the Black Sea resort of Sochi.
In the process, Ronaldo became the first player to score a hat-trick against Spain in the quadrennial competition. His first goal in the match had made him the first player to score in eight consecutive major tournaments.
Incidentally, the game marked the first time Ronaldo's team - club or country - did not win after the player scored a hat-trick.
#1 Cristiano Ronaldo wins the European Championship (2016)
Cristiano Ronaldo could have won his first European Championship way back in 2004, but hosts Portugal stumbled in the final against Greece. Twelve years later, Ronaldo would lift the Euros, albeit with the player hobbling off injured after half an hour in the final.
In the biggest match of his international career, Ronaldo lasted barely thirty minutes on the field after a Dimitri Payet tackle injured his left knee. A tearful Ronaldo twice tried to return to action with a heavily-strapped knee before hobbling off the field.
A little more than an hour later, Ronaldo cried for a third time on the night, this time shedding tears of joy, as Portugal sealed a narrow 1-0 extra-time win over France to become the newest European champions.
Earlier in the tournament, Ronaldo scored a brace against Hungary and netted in the semi-final against Wales. He also provided an assist against Croatia and hit the winning penalty in the shootout win over Poland.
