Raphael Varane has revealed why he turned down the chance to work under his former boss Jose Mourinho at Manchester United. The 23-year-old was brought to Real Madrid by the Portuguese manager and has since been unable to nail down a starting spot in the squad – prompting interest from a host of European clubs including Manchester United.
Jose Mourinho initially made contact with the youngster even before targeting – and later signing – Villarreal's Eric Bailly but the Frenchman was adamant to make it at Real Madrid where he felt he had some unfinished business.

"It was flattering to hear of United's interest," Varane told Canal+ France.
"Mourinho is the one who convinced me to come to Real Madrid and (United) is a great club.
"But from the first moment I knew the project and that [Real] had for me and my role, there were no more questions."
A key member for the Real Madrid side under Zinedine Zidane
Varane's chances of succeeding at Real Madrid grow stronger by the year and under the stewardship of his compatriot Zinedine Zidane, the 23-year-old is set to become a key member soon enough. These arguments played a huge part in deciding his future and whether he would accept Mourinho's offer.
"I've always felt happy at Real Madrid," he added. "I looked at the pros and cons - it was the biggest decision of my career."
Varane made 33 appearances for the Los Blancos last season and giving Pepe's ageing, is likely to be given a much more vital role this season onwards. The 23-year-old, however, failed to make it to the French national team in the UEFA European Championships earlier this summer due to an injury.
Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, Chelsea, both Manchester clubs and a host of other clubs across Europe are very keen on trying to pry Varane away from Real Madrid. This is one rumour that will not be put to rest – unless, of course, he signs a new long-term contract soon. His current deal expires in 2020.
