Ray Wilkins lambasts Manchester United's “pathetic” Ashley Young

Ray Wilkins blasts Ashley Young

Ashley Young has again taken the spotlight after living up to his reputation as one of the most prominent divers in football.

The Manchester United winger won a penalty for his side – which was eventually missed by Robin van Persie – shortly after entering the field of play against Real Sociedad. Despite Van Persie striking the post from the resulting spot kick, Ray Wilkins was damning in his evaluation of the decision and more so, the actions of Young.

“This is pathetic,” Wilkins told Sky Sports. “This is as bad for me as all these over-the-top tackles we’re getting at the moment because that is a conning of the referee.

“I just wish Ashley would cut this out because he’s a good player but he’s getting a bad name.”

David Moyes was quick to defend the 28-year-old, though, despite often stating that he informs his players that diving won’t be accepted under his reign.

“I’ve seen it and the boy certainly tugs him in the box,” the Scot said. “The referee is two yards away from it and decides to give it.

“All I know is he got a penalty kick from a decision; I don’t know about his reputation, but the referee is there and he gave it.”

The former Everton manager continued to back the referee and argued that his decisions are the ones that matter at the end of the day, noting Marouane Fellaini‘s late red card.

“The referee made decisions all night. He’s the one who saw fit to award a penalty and send a player off.”

Despite receiving the backing of his manager in public, Young will no doubt be warned once again to watch his actions on the pitch as the England international looks to regain his place in the starting line-up.

Ashely Young has completed just three successful take-ons from a possible ten in the Premier League, giving him a take-on success of 30%.
