Real Madrid overcame a two-goal first-half deficit and smashed five past Borussia Dortmund to win 5-2 in the third round of fixtures in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, October 22. The Santiago Bernabeu hosted the encounter.

Following Real Madrid's win over Celta Vigo over the weekend, manager Carlo Ancelotti made three changes to the side. Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Fran Garcia made way for Luka Modric, Rodrygo, and Ferland Mendy.

Dortmund were also coming off a win over FC St. Pauli and they made three changes as well. Niklas Sule, Felix Nmecha, and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens came in for Waldemar Anton, Pascal Gross, and Emre Can.

An exhilarating first half saw both teams create loads of chances, but it was the visitors who took them well. Donyell Malen put them on the board in the 30th minute, getting on the end of a pass from Serhou Guirassy and finishing past Thibaut Courtois.

Malen turned provider just four minutes later. A splendid run on the counter ended with the Dutchman setting up Gittens for a simple tap-in as the German side doubled their lead.

Real Madrid were not too far off in the period despite the scoreline. They hit the woodwork twice while Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham missed a couple of great chances.

The hosts began to find their groove much more in the second half, dominating the affair. It finally paid dividends as they pulled one back in the 60th minute. Mbappe chipped a ball in from the right flank and Antonio Rudiger powered home a header to make it 2-1.

Just two minutes later, the game was level as Vinicius Jr tapped home into an empty net after Mbappe was tackled when one-on-one with the keeper.

Real Madrid completed the comeback in the 83rd minute through Lucas Vazquez. Surging forward, the Spaniard rifled home from an angle to make it 3-2.

Los Blancos added on the style late on. Vinicius bagged his brace with a splendid effort, getting past two defenders before finding the bottom corner in the 86th minute. The Brazilian attacker completed his hat-trick in stoppage time, once again moving past defenders and scoring to make it 5-2.

The result sees Real Madrid jump up to ninth place, with two wins and a loss from their three games. Dortmund, meanwhile, suffered their first loss of the campaign but remain fifth. Here are the player ratings for Los Blancos:

Real Madrid Player Ratings

Thibaut Courtois - 6.5/10

A barrage of attacks early on from the visitors meant Courtois had to stay on his toes. He could not do much about either of their two efforts but was decent otherwise, finishing with five saves.

Lucas Vazquez - 6.5/10

He was a little careless on the ball, giving it away which led to Dortmund's first goal. He made amends for it with a brilliant goal in the second half, which gave Real Madrid the lead.

Antonio Rudiger - 7/10

The Los Blancos backline was under a lot of pressure in the first half and he dealt with it well before getting on the scoresheet himself with a powerful header.

Eder Militao - 6/10

The worse of the two centre-backs on the night as the Brazilian struggled at times to deal with the visitors.

Ferland Mendy - 6/10

A solid outing from the Frenchman, but he could have probably done better in preventing the second, with Malen getting past him with ease.

Fede Valverde - 6/10

A different role for the energetic Valverde, playing at the base of midfield, which saw the side lose a bit of control with his positioning. He looked more comfortable in the second half, finishing with one chance created and five passes into the final third.

Luka Modric - 6.5/10

Modric had a strong 70 minutes and played a key role in the build-up to the side's second goal. He was also solid off the ball, winning two duels and making one tackle and one interception.

Jude Bellingham - 5.5/10

It continues to be a frustrating season for the midfielder who came close to scoring twice in the first period. He is yet to find the back of the net this season, causing some concerns among Real Madrid supporters.

Rodrygo - 6.5/10

The Brazilian winger continues to be a key presence down the right flank for the hosts. He linked up well and came close to scoring with a sensational effort in the first half.

Kylian Mbappe - 7/10

Mbappe overcame a poor first-half performance and was much improved in the second, setting up Rudiger's goal and generating more threat.

Vinicius Jr - 9/10

Similar to Mbappe, Vinicius was anonymous at times in the first period but showed his class in the second. A simple tap-in combined with two great finishes secured his hat-trick as the Brazilian showed his class, putting the Dortmund defense to the sword.

Substitutes

Eduardo Camavinga - 6/10

Replaced Modric for the last 20 minutes and had a solid outing.

Aurelien Tchouameni, Dani Ceballos, and Arda Guler - N/A

The trio came on late and did not play enough minutes to merit a rating.
