Champions League winners Real Madrid kick-start their La Liga campaign with an away trip to Real Sociedad on 21 August 2016 at the Anoeta Stadium. This will be Zinedine Zidane’s first full season as Real Madrid manager who guided Los Blancos to La Undecima at the end of last season. Real Madrid will be looking to snatch the La Liga crown from Barcelona.
2015-16 was a season filled with excitement and joy for Real Madrid supporters. The fans got to see the long-time Real faithful Zinedine Zidane become the club’s manager after Rafa Benitez was sacked just seven months after he took charge. They put up a late fight in the La Liga, almost snatching the title from Barcelona and the season ended with celebrations as Los Blancos lifted their record 11th Champions League trophy defeating local rivals Atletico Madrid on penalties.
Cristiano Ronaldo top-scored for the Madrid outfit with 35 goals in the La Liga. Real Madrid will be looking to win their first Primera Division title since Jose Mourinho led them to a win in the 2010-11 season.
The first Madrid Derby is scheduled on 20 November 2016 at the Vicente Calderon, with the return leg on 9 April 2017 to be played at Santiago Bernabeu. Atletico tragically lost their second Champions League Final to Real Madrid in three years, with coach Diego Simeone considering a move away from Los Rojiblancos. However, it was all smiles in the white part of Madrid where Zidane joined a club of a few to have won the Champions League both as a player and a manager.
Real Madrid face Barcelona in El Clasico on 4 December 2016 in Camp Nou. The return fixture is scheduled for 23 April 2017. Madrid got the better of Barcelona the last time these two giants faced each other in a La Liga clash with Real Madrid winning 2-1 in April. However, they were battered 4-0 by the Catalan club, with Suarez getting on the score sheet twice.
Real Madrid’s last match in the La Liga season will be an away game against Malaga. Cristiano Ronaldo and co. would want to wrap things up before that and get a chance to lift the trophy at the Bernabeu.
