Spanish giants Real Madrid have tabled a world record bid of over £85m for Tottenham Hotspur winger Gareth Bale.

According to a Sky Sports report, the bid was lodged about a week ago and is deemed to be resting on the table of Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who is yet to show any inclination towards the offer. It is a cash only offer and does not involve any Madrid players travelling in the opposite direction, as some reports had been speculating earlier.

Levy is currently believed to not be in the country, and so far there has been no change on Spur’s stance that the Welsh winger is not for sale at any price. The player himself has not revealed much, choosing to maintain a low profile and not responding to any of the speculation surrounding him.

Last season, the 24-year old Welshman had a stand-out season with the North London side as he scored 24 goals and dished out 8 assists, as Spurs just missed out on 4th place and UEFA Champions League qualification. His performances saw him take home the PFA Young Player of the Year, the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the FWA Footballer of the Year awards last season.

If the deal goes through, Madrid would eclipse the previous world record fee they themselves paid 4 years ago, when they paid £80 million to Manchester United to secure the services of Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
