Real Madrid legend Jose Maria Guti has waded into the long-standing arguments between Barcelona defender Gerard Pique and Alvaro Arbeloa on Twitter. The retired Spanish midfielder criticized Pique for a ‘lack of respect’ towards fellow professional Arbeloa, noting that the repeated comments against each other should stop.
The latest in the Twitter war between Arbeloa and Pique happened upon Barcelona’s loss to Real Sociedad, with Arbeloa tweeting “How difficult it is to win against 11 men! Great games from Illarramendi and Granero - promise fulfilled. Congratulations!”
Pique responded by taking a dig on Arbeloa’s lack of playing time on radio station Cope, saying “I'd ask my friends that if at some point I am no longer a protagonist on the pitch they would not let me become one off it.”
Guti rages at Pique
However, Guti has had the latest say, accusing Pique of a lack of respect when he appeared on the Chiringuito de Jogones TV show, saying “You are the funniest guy in the world when Madrid lose, and when Barca lose nobody can write a tweet about it? You should be a man and take these tweets when you lose.”
“A line has been crossed. This is too many times, with Pique. I've never seen a Madrid or Barca player, still playing, show so little respect for a fellow professional. It's enough already with Pique. He cannot talk about Arbeloa as he has done, even in Barcelona it is starting to get noticed.”
Guti was especially critical of Pique targeting Arbeloa, saying “It's one thing to be happy when Madrid lose, as I am when Barca slip up, and another to talk like that about a fellow pro.”
Guti also went on to say that were Barcelona stalwarts Xavi Hernandes and Carles Puyol still at the club, Pique would have been told to focus on his performances, saying “[Pique] has learned nothing from Xavi and Puyol. The personality has eaten up the footballer. Since when have we stopped talking about Pique for his performances on the pitch? For a year now Pique has been in the news for things not to do with football.”
Pique’s speciality at antagonizing Barcelona came to the fore in the last El Clasico, scoring a header against his hated rivals, although Real Madrid had the last laugh, winning the game 2-1.
