Los Blancos legend and former striker Carlos Santillana has said that Cristiano Ronaldo needs to lose his arrogant attitude if he is to win back the support and respect of the Real Madrid fans.
Ronaldo, who has an astounding 293 career goals to his name, in addition to three Ballon d’Or trophies, had started the season in great fashiion. However his recent behaviour, both on and off the pitch, has resulted in many Real Madrid fans voicing their displeasure with their star player.
His decision to go ahead with his 30th birthday celebrations despite losing to local rivals Atletico Madrid 4-0, resulted in large sections of fans and media questioning his devotion to the team.
He was sent off against Cordoba in late January for kicking and punching Edimar inside Cordoba’s penalty box. Furthermore he angered Cordoba fans by pointing to the Club World Cup winners badge on his jersey as he made his way towards the sideline.
Ronaldo should stop being arrogant: Santillana
Santillana has indicated that Ronaldo must lose his cocky attitude to gain the respect of his supporters. He said, “As a fan, I don't like to see Cristiano Ronaldo like that, but that's the way he is. He should still put a lid on his shows of arrogance, though".
Speaking about the upcoming El Clasico, Santillana said, "If Real Madrid win at the Camp Nou, they'll have earned a moral victory, and if Barcelona win, then they'll be a little closer to winning the title; but I can't pick a favourite."
He also defended Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, saying, “When you're a player and you're on the pitch you don't hear anything, so I don't understand managers that bark orders from the sidelines. What really matters is that they have authority in the dressing room."
