Former Real Madrid star Luis Figo has voiced his fears about Zinedine Zidane’s future, citing the trigger happy nature of Real Madrid when it comes to its managers as the reason. Figo and Zidane were teammates together at Real Madrid, and the Portuguese legend revealed his pleasure at the job Zidane is doing at the helm of the Madrid giants.
Figo’s comments were aired in a column in Spanish newspaper El Mundo, with the Portuguese star revealing his concerns about Zidane’s future, saying “I hope that he will remain Madrid coach for many more years, but the position of coach at Madrid is very unstable and it always depends on results. They change coaches a lot of times.”
Figo’s concerns have some justification, as the last 13 Real Madrid managers have not lasted more that three years at the Santiago Bernabeu. Given that this is the French legend’s first managerial job, Real Madrid might hold off on removing Zidane so soon, which is likely given Real Madrid’s promising positions in La Liga and the Champions League.
Figo also noted that the UEFA Champions League trophy ought to be Zidane’s objective, saying “I think they have the opportunity to win it. They will have to fight hard to achieve it, but there is no doubt the objective for the season is to win the Champions League.”
Figo always knew Zidane would be a manager
Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane spent 4 years together at Real Madrid, part of the famed Galacticos side that was assembled by Florentino Perez. The pair share a great relationship of the pitch and Figo revealed his pleasure at Zidane’s current situation, saying “I am very happy for Zidane that he is Madrid coach, both as a former team-mate and as a friend.”
“He is very shy but a super honest person and a very good professional. He's a great friend and a symbol of Real Madrid. A person with his experience and knowledge of the values of the club should always have a place in the team. I think him becoming Madrid coach was a natural process. He always wanted to become a coach.”
Zidane will oversee Real Madrid as they take on Manchester City in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semifinal clash on Wednesday night, a competition that Figo hopes Real Madrid win, so as to ensure his friend remains in the job.
