Real Madrid were dealt a huge blow when both Gareth Bale and Luka Modric had to be substituted after sustaining injuries in the 3-1 win over Malaga on Saturday night. This could impact Los Blancos’ season with a crucial Champions League quarter-final tie this week against city rivals Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid are also just two points behind Barcelona in La Liga.
Gareth Bale lasted only five minutes before he pulled up and went to ground. The Welshman sustained a suspected calf muscle tear. Carlo Ancelotti was forced to make a substitution and had to eventually bring on Javier Hernandez.
Luka Modric lasted 56 minutes before he too had to be replaced by Asier Illarramendi. And most reports suggest that the Croatian midfielder will be out of action for five to six weeks.
We’re worrid about Modric: James Rodriguez
Colombian midfielder James Rodriguez, who scored in the 3-1 win, said: “We’re worried about him (Modric) but hopefully he’s okay.
“He’s a great player, with a great touch and capable of scoring goals.”
With both Bale and Modric potentially out of the squad for the midweek clash, Real Madrid have an uphill task of qualifying for the Champions League semi-final. The first leg of the quarter-final eded 0-0 at Vicente Calderon and Carlo Ancelotti will be wary of not allowing Atletico to grab an away goal at the Bernabeu.
Rodriguez added: "Hopefully, we’ll all be fit for the match.
“They’re a very tough rival and our matches are always difficult. We need to concentrate.”
