What's the story?
Sergio Ramos is well on his way to breaking Real Madrid legend Raul's appearance record of 741 games for Real Madrid. Ramos played his 600th match against Ajax, becoming the seventh player in Los Blancos' rich history to have achieved that rare feat.
In case you didn't know...
Despite enduring a rocky start to the current campaign, Ramos is enjoying one of the finest seasons of his decorated career. Aside from being a pivotal part of Real Madrid's rearguard, what is really spectacular is the fact that he has scored 11 goals for the side in the 2018/19 season so far.
The 32-year-old Spanish defender was at his best in the crucial away games against Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Ajax. The team won two of these fixtures, conceding just three goals.
The heart of the matter
Ramos has spent 14 seasons at Madrid and averages 42 matches per campaign. The Blancos legend currently has two years left on his contract and with an average of 42 games per season, he won't reach Raul's record. Achieving the rare feat would require Madrid to extend his contract at the club and he could well surpass the 700-match mark in 2021.
It goes without saying that Los Blancos' leader needs to maintain his fitness and form to break the record but there are no signs of him slowing down with age.
Despite being one of the older players on the team, Ramos has only missed one half against Espanyol, two Copa del Rey games and two Champions League fixtures this season.
What's next?
Real Madrid face Girona later tonight following which they will clash with Levante before turning their focus to Barcelona for games in the Copa del Rey and LaLiga.
Coming to Sergio Ramos' future, all things point towards the captain extending his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu by renewing his contract, thereby holding him in good stead to break Raul's record.
