What's the news?
Olympique Lyon superstar Ferland Mendy is on the verge of becoming a Real Madrid player and is set to undergo a medical in Paris.
In case you didn't know...
After a disappointing season both domestically and in Europe, Los Blancos are desperate to strengthen their squad this summer in order to get back to winning titles next season. The 13-times European Champions finished 19 points behind arch-rivals Barcelona in La Liga and were kicked out of the Champions League by Ajax in the Round of 16.
Lyon's left-back Ferland Mendy has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent weeks. Zinedine Zidane wants to bring the 23-year-old to Santiago Bernabeu to compete with Marcelo for the left-back spot.
The Frenchman has had an impressive campaign with Lyon, making 44 appearances across all competition this season. Marca previously reported that Los Blancos were closing in on the signing of the full-back, with the two clubs hoping to reach an agreement. Both Barcelona and Juventus were also said to be interested in the left-back.
The heart of the matter
According to Marca, Ferland Mendy is on the verge of completing a move to Real Madrid, and will undergo a medical in Paris while the two clubs finalise the deal. Mendy is currently on international duty with France and will be announced as a Real Madrid player only after the final game against Andorra on 11 June.
What's next?
Marca has been quite reliable when it comes to news regarding Real Madrid, so these reports seem to have some substance. The Los Blancos need a long term replacement for the ageing Marcelo, and Ferland Mendy could be the perfect player.
The 23-year-old has got huge potential and can develop into one of the best full-backs in the country. We'll have to wait till 11th June for an official announcement, after the full-back returns from international duty.
