It seems that Sheikh Al-Khelaïfi is not satisfied after spending more than £150m on the likes of Javier Pastore, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Reports emerged last night that French moneybags PSG had an offer, believed to be in excess of £35m for Karim Benzema, turned down. The deal would have made Karim Benzema the highest paid footballer in French history.
Benzema, who Real Madrid signed from Lyon in the summer of 2009, had a spectacular 2011/12 campaign with 32 goals and 15 assists in all competitions. This prompted manager Jose Mourinho to mark him as a “non-transferable player”, a tag which the Frenchman will surely appreciate after a difficult first season with the Spanish outfit.
It remains to be seen whether PSG will accept defeat or try to comeback with a bigger offer. But for now, it’s a clear indication that not everyone in football is for sale. Reports suggest PSG will now shift their attention to Napoli‘s Edinson Cavani and Bilbao’s Fernando Llorente.
