It was known that the former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola, had been on a year-long sabbatical and yet, all the major clubs of England were vying for his signature.
A few days ago, Guardiola he claimed that he would like to join an English club and everyone was hoping he would script a success story and write a new chapter in English football.
But contrary to all this, Guardiola agreed to join German giants Bayern Munich on a three-year deal come June next season.
Rio Ferdinand of Manchester United tweeted that it came as a shock to him after reading about his new destination, but also claimed that he understood why he did so. Here are the possible reasons behind his move:
Barcelona-like
Pep Guardiola had won 14 major trophies in 4 years with Barcelona with his possession football methods. Bayern Munich are quite similar in their style of play to. They too are known for keeping the ball and harassing their opponents.
Rich history
Bayern Munich have been the big boys of the Bundesliga for years. They have won 4 Champions League and have been the runners-up twice in past 3 years. With such superiority at European stage, it’s hard to resist such a job opportunity.
Young but experienced squad
Guardiola likes to give chance to young players and there is a plethora of them at Bayern. With Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer and others, there is a huge crop of youngsters to nurture. In addition they also have experienced players like Philip Lahm, Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben who are always ready to shoulder responsibilities.
Manchester City and Chelsea are vulnerable
It’s clear that at Chelsea, if the standards don’t match the owner’s, the firing spree’s first casualty is always the manager. On the other hand at City there is more onus on buying talent rather than creating it. Guardiola has always proceeded cautiously as he thinks differently and hence he remained at a safe distance from these clubs.
With all these reasons it can be said that it’s a fair and sensible decision but only time will tell us if it’s a successful one. Say hello to the first Spanish manager in Bayern’s history.
