Even though Ander Herrera has already turned United down once, it is reported they will make another move for the Bilbao midfielder come this January. His buyout clause stands at a whopping €36m (as per the Guardian report), but if United does manage to price him away it will be the start towards the right path for Moyes and co, who recently are back to the winning ways and slowly are climbing up the table.
Here are three reasons why United should go all out for this Spanish midfielder.
Lack of depth
Manchester United have a gaping hole when it comes to quality central midfielders. Anderson, Tom Cleverley and Darren Fletcher are all average or worse and it is where United are currently lacking the most when it comes to other big European teams. Herrera is one of Athletic Bilbao’s best players and is also one of the standout midfielders in La Liga. His quality could help United return to the big time and help ease some of their midfield embarrassment.
Playing in a league as tough as the Premier League, the top teams are packed with quality midfielders and although United managed to gun down teams under Sir Alex Ferguson even without a proper defensive midfielder during his final years, you cannot expect the same from the former Everton manager.
No creativity
Herrera isn’t the most creative player in the world either, but he can launch attacks, something the current crop of United midfielders are incapable of doing. Chelsea have Ramires. Arsenal have Aaron Ramsey, Manchester City have Fernandinho and Liverpool have Steven Gerrard. Having a good box to box midfielder pays off, and United currently don’t, which means they are at a disadvantage when facing decent Premier League sides.
When on song, Herrera can be as good as Carrick or even better than Carrick. With Carrick, Fellaini and the out of favour Kagawa not helping the Red Devils, Wayne Rooney has been the only saviour for them and the England International is playing a double of creating and finishing off chances with his striker partner van Persie still on the sidelines.
United are currently running out of options and the injuries to key players certainly haven’t helped them. Herrera is your proper central midfielder, a player whose trump card and the main weapon is creativity, a trait that has been missing in this United’s team.
As per squawka.com, from the 14 matches Cleverley has played, he is yet to get on the assist sheet and has just scored a single goal in the league. Elsewhere Kagawa has just made 6 appearances and has failed to create any magic.
The likes of Januzaj and Valencia alongside Rooney and Welbeck are playing to their potential at the moment but it remains a fact that they are missing a good creative force at the heart of their midfield.
To show the world they are still an attractive club
How many big name players have rejected Manchester United over the past few seasons? The embarrassing figure is now into double digits, with Herrera already being one of those who rejected the Red Devil’s advances. If they can manage to change the Spain midfielders mind and move to Old Trafford, it may break their current duck and attract more world class talent.
