Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo is now the all-time highest goalscorer in the Champions League

The UEFA Champions League is back and Matchday 1 saw a number of noteworthy results. While Real Madrid slammed four goals past Shakhtar Donetsk, 2014/15 finalists Juventus came from behind to beat Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad. Elsewhere, Manchester United also surrendered an advantage as they lost 2-1 to Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven.

Tuesday night also saw a number of records broken and milestones reached – both on an individual and team level. We take a look at some of the key stats and facts from the Champions League encounters.

Cristiano Ronaldo is on a mission as Real Madrid win

The Portuguese star forward was on target for Real Madrid against Shakhtar Donetsk and netted a hat-trick to make it eight goals in two games.

Ronaldo is now the all-time highest goalscorer in the Champions League (80 goals) and all European competitions (83 goals).

Ronaldo needs two more goals to become Real Madrid’s highest goalscorer in the Champions League / European Cup history. Raul leads the list with 66 goals.

Ronaldo is now one goal short of 500 goals in his career for both club and country (499 goals for Portugal, Sporting Clube de Portugal, Manchester United and Real Madrid).

Ronaldo also has the most hat-tricks among players in Spanish clubs. He now has 33 hat-tricks, one ahead of Lionel Messi who has 32.

Ronaldo has also scored the most penalties in Champions League history with 11 strikes. He was previously behind both Luis Figo and Ruud van Nistelrooy (10 each) before scoring twice from the spot against Donetsk.

Karim Benzema moved up to ninth in the Champions League all-time highest goalscorers after he scored his 43rd goal. He is now tied with Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Benzema is now the fifth highest goal scorer for Real Madrid in Europe (31 goals) – behind Raul (66 goals), Ronaldo (65 goals), Alfredo Di Stefano (49 goals) and Ferenc Puskas (35 goals). He had scored 12 goals with Lyon.

Among players who have never taken a penalty in the champions League, no player has more goals than Benzema. The next best is Fernando Morientes with 33 goals.

This is the first time in history where Real Madrid have started a season without conceding a goal in their first four matches.

Manchester sides struggle in Champions League

Bastian Schweinsteiger Man Utd
Bastian Schweinsteiger – not used to losing the first group stage match

For the first time in Champions League history, both Manchester City and Manchester United lost on the same day. Looking back in history, no team has ever won the tournament after losing their first game.

The last time Manchester United lost the first Champions League match was 19 years ago – they had lost 1-0 to Juventus.

Although David De Gea was the Player of the Year for Manchester United, he has failed to keep a clean sheet since March 15 when Manchester United beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at Old Trafford.

The 2015/16 Champions League season is Bastian Schweinsteiger’s 13th campaign in Europe – a new record for German players. He was previously tied with Michael Ballack on 12.

This is the first time Schweinsteiger has lost the first match in the group stages of the Champions League.

Memphis Depay is only the third Dutch player to score for Manchester United in the Champions League after Ruud van Nistelrooy and Robin van Persie. Four of United’s last five Champions League goals have been scored by Dutch players (Van Persie and Depay).
