With the champions having been decided early along with the rest of the Champions’ League positions the top-heavy La Liga looks dull heading into the last weekend. But a view inside makes Sunday look one of the most interesting and fate-deciding days of the season. The battle for two Europa League spot and to get out of the only remaining slot for relegation will see a lot of players putting their heart and soul in the last game of the season. At first let us take look situation the clubs are in before the final round of play.

Relegation Threatened Teams:
The most interesting thing at this relegation dog-fight is that the fate of each club lies in their own hands. If any of these 7 teams win they are safe. If they draw or lose they have to depend on the other results.
Levante: At the 12th position just before last matchday should be a safe position to stay. But the competition between the middle and lower teams in la liga is so fierce that at 12th position, Levante is just 3 points away from 18th placed Real Zaragoza. Not really threatened to a relegation as even a loss keep them as Real Sociedad and Getafe plays each other and both below Levante in the table. Levante is safe and will surely stay at the Primera division next year.
RCD Mallorca: RCD Mallorca had an enormous season last year and finished 5th with the award to play in Europa League. But financial crisis let down their Europa League hopes as well as their performance in the league. Before the last match to be played this Sunday they are in a dangerous situation to get relegated. A win over Atletico Madrid will take them to a safe place, but that will not be easy as Atletico themselves need to win to earn a spot in the Europa League. If Mallorca draw or lose they will have to hope at least one of Getafe, Deportivo La Coruna, Real Zaragoza and Osasuna not win their match.
Verdict: Safe. Even if they fail to win, they have a lot of outlet.
Real Sociedad: In one of the most interesting battle on last day, Real Sociedad will face fellow relegation-struggler Getafe at home. A draw or win will retain their status in the Primera Liga as Getafe is below them at this moment. If they lose they will hope at least one of Mallorca, Osasuna, Deportivo La Coruna loses or Real Zaragoza fails to win at Levante.
Verdict: Doubtful. Unless they can take at least one point from Getafe they may get involved in a difficult calculation of the head-to-head records with 3-4 other teams with same points.
Osasuna: Osasuna have one of the toughest opponent in the last week, Villarreal. But that may be a blessing in disguise as Villarreal won’t have a lot of motivation to play the best game ever and Osasuna will have no lack of that. A draw would be enough as that will leave at least one of Real Sociedad below them even if the rest of the teams win. A loss will put them in a similar situation as Sociedad with a lot of calculations to be done.
Verdict: Safe. A desperate last attempt may see them win some points from Villarreal at the last night and keep themselves at top level.
Getafe: The Madrid side will try to remain in the top level and a win at Sociedad will ensure that. A loss will put them in a difficult situation and the fans have to hope that either Zaragoza or Deportivo La Coruna loses to keep them alive. A draw may leave them at top if Deportivo or Zaragoza follow them.
Verdict: Risky. It will be difficult for them to win over Sociedad who themselves are battling relegation. Only way out is if Deportivo or Zaragoza let them stay by themselves going down.
Deportivo La Coruna: Winning is the only way to stay on top unless Zaragoza or Getafe loses. A draw would be sufficient if Zaragoza fails to win or Getafe loses. Deportivo might have got the toughest set of last two matches as they play Valencia after playing Barcelona the last weekend. But again this may be the best time to play the top teams as they will get more involved in experimenting with the teams than putting the best effort to win.
Verdict: Risky. Though Levante earned 2 points from these 2 matches to take them to safe place and Deportivo has done half the job, but earning a point against Valencia may be tough.
Real Zaragoza: A win, safe in la liga. A draw, wait for other results. A loss, welcome back to Liga Adelante. This is the situation Real Zaragoza is when they take to the field tonight. A win will take them above Levante and will be safe. If they draw, they have to hope for a loss by either Deportivo or Getafe both of whom have poor head-to-head record against Zaragoza.
Verdict: Doubtful. Though I feel that they will be able to defeat Levante and stay on top level. Real Zaragoza has a good record against the lower teams and they will hope to continue that.
The fate of each team lies in their own hand and they will give to the most of their abilities on one last night to keep their team at the top level of Spanish league. The most interesting match will be between Real Sociedad and Getafe and there is a lot of chance that one of these two go down. However, all the teams may relax if Real Zaragoza loses to Levante.
In my view, Deportivo La Coruna looks worst placed in this battle followed by Getafe and then Real Zaragoza.
The other interesting battle would be for a place in the Europa League. As both the finalists of Copa Del Rey (Real Madrid and Bracelona) are in the Champions League for sure both fifth and sixth team will qualify for Europa League. Three teams battling for these two spots are on same points.
Battle for Europa League Spot
Pos | Club | Played | Points | GC | Opponent |
5 | Sevilla | 37 | 55 | 0 | Espanyol (A) |
6 | Athletic Bilbao | 37 | 55 | 3 | Racing Santander (A) |
7 | Atletico Madrid | 37 | 55 | 8 | Mallorca (A) |
Atletico Madrid is placed seventh as they have the worst record in the head-to-head struggle between these three and looking at the opponents it looks like this part of the table will remain same and Athletic Bilbao and Sevilla will qualify for Europa League.
