Former Old Trafford coach Rene Meulensteen has backed Manchester United‘s pursuit of midfielder Juan Mata.
With the Spaniard reportedly due to complete a £40 million move from Chelsea to the reigning champions imminently, the Fulham boss believes the 25 year-old represents a good signing.
If, as expected, the deal is completed later this week following a medical Mata will become the first player United have signed from Chelsea during the Premier League era, but Meulensteen puts this down to The West Londoners not boasting players suited to United.
“In the past United didn’t really have such as an interest in players as they have for Mata and obviously he’s available. Player wants to come, Manchester United want him, simple.
“I think he’s a great player. I think he would definitely improve them,” he told The Daily Star.
Despite the 49 year-old’s belief Mata will be a success, doubts continue to linger as to how the Spaniard will be utilised by David Moyes. Although United’s midfield have received the brunt of criticism throughout United’s poor form, slotting Mata into the team will not be simple.
Mata is undeniably an outstanding talent, but one marquee signing might not be enough to rescue United’s near catastrophic season.
