Repeating treble a big ask, says Javi Martinez

Bayern Munich’s Spain midfielder Javi Martinez admits it will be “very difficult” to repeat this season’s treble success, but insists the Bavarians will do everything to successfully defend all of their titles under new coach Pep Guardiola.

“This season we made history by winning three trophies because no German team had done it before,” Martinez said in an interview with the Munich daily TZ.

“It will be difficult but we will give our all to be celebrating again next year,” he added when asked if Bayern could repeat the feat.

After winning the Supercup at the beginning of the season, Bayern became the first German club ever to win the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League in the same campaign.

They are also one of only seven European clubs to win such a treble in the same season, and the first since Inter Milan in 2010.

Martinez moved to Bayern from Athletic Bilbao for 40 million euros ($52.5m) last summer and admits such a successful début campaign was beyond even his wildest dreams.

“I honestly didn’t expect that we would win the treble when I arrived here last summer. I knew that the team was capable of great things, but I didn’t think we could do this,” he said.

Martinez, 24, is currently with the Spain squad preparing for this month’s Confederations Cup in Brazil.

He will therefore miss Bayern’s first training session under new coach Guardiola, which is scheduled for June 26.
