Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers seem determined to up the ante this January and go in for shopping early this transfer window with the Merseysiders lining up a move for Bayern Munich’s Xherdan Shaqiri, according to reports. If the report from renowned Italian journalist, Gianluca Di Marzio is to be believed, the Reds are ready to splash €14 million up front to bring the Swiss international winger to English shores.
Shaqiri was a major source of speculation for transfer in the summer after failing to get much playing time for Pep Guardiola in his first season in charge of the Bavarians. A successful World Cup campaign which saw Shaqiri net a hat-trick against Honduras and the Swiss qualify to the knock-out stages of the tournament, further fuelled speculations regarding the ex-Basel midfielder’s future at the Allianz Arena.
This season hasn’t been much different for the Swiss, with 10 of his 15 appearances having come from the bench for the run-away Bundesliga leaders.
Liverpool, meanwhile have been reeling in the Premier League with Luis Suarez no more at the club and Daniel Sturridge missing a majority of the season due to injury. With summer signing Mario Balotelli looking a shadow of his former self, Liverpool have found it hard to really put the pedal to the metal in terms of going forward.
Thus, the addition of the left-footed winger would certainly help the Reds add another dimension to the game with the pace, trickery and directness of Shaqiri sure to create havoc in opposition defences.
