While the focus was firmly on Real Madrid’s negotiations for David De Gea, they turned down a massive £110 million bid for star player Cristiano Ronaldo from French champions Paris Saint-Germain, according to the Brazilian news outlet Globo Esporte, The Mirror reported. Los Blancos did not even consider the offer according to the report as the bid was immediately rejected.
The Pichichi winner from last season has consistently been among the best players for Real Madrid since he joined the Spanish club in 2009. At the time, his £80 million move from Manchester United made him the most expensive player in the world. He would no doubt justify that tag with his innate goalscoring ability that has taken him to within touching distance of Real Madrid’s all-time highest goalscorer Raul Gonzalez’s record.
However, Real themselves broke their big-spending record when they signed Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspurs for a smashing £85.3 million making him the most expensive man in the footballing world. If the reported bid from PSG for the Portuguese hit-man had been accepted, it would not only make him the player with the most expensive price tag on a single transfer but would put him on top of the list of players with the highest cumulative transfer fees by a long shot.
The reigning French champions did bring in Angel Di Maria in a big move this summer, though Manchester United took a hit on his transfer fee as the Argentine headed to Paris. Laurent Blanc’s side have been on a quest for better results in the Champions League for a number of seasons now and much like Manchester City, have struggled in Europe so far. However, now both the sides look set to mount a serious challenge on the biggest European club stage of all.
Ronaldo could break Raul’s goalscoring record
Raul Gonzalez scored 323 goals for Los Blancos during his long tenure at Santiago Bernabeu making him the club’s highest goalscorer. Now, Cristiano Ronaldo is only 10 behind the Spanish maestro and looks favourite to go past him this season.
The Portuguese goalscoring machine hasn’t struck yet in two games this season for Real, having an especially frustrating outing against Real Betis when the hosts put 5 past Betis but Ronaldo could not get on the scoresheet despite making several attempts to change that fact.
However, the star forwards ratio of scoring more than a goal a game for the club is intact and few would bet on the numbers dipping this season for Ronaldo.
